奥地利指挥家、作曲家维杰·乌帕德亚雅出生于印度勒克瑙。他在奥地利格拉茨音乐与表演艺术大学获得了指挥和作曲学位，同时在印度取得了塔布拉鼓和卡塔克舞的学位。此外，他还获得了勒克瑙大学的文学学士（英语文学、经济学和历史学）学位。

维杰·乌帕德亚雅现任维也纳大学爱乐乐团艺术总监，每年协调并指挥约50场交响音乐会和合唱音乐会。他因对奥地利文化活动的卓越贡献获得奥地利共和国金奖荣誉提名。他曾与多位世界著名艺术家合作，包括彼得·塞勒斯、克里斯托弗·施林根西夫、苏巴什·盖伊，并曾在维也纳国家歌剧院、维也纳城堡剧院、慕尼黑巴伐利亚国家歌剧院、阿姆斯特丹皇家音乐厅、罗马圣塞西利亚国立学院和汉堡国立歌剧院登台演出。

维杰·乌帕德亚曾担任巴黎、加拿大埃德蒙顿、格鲁吉亚第比利斯、哈萨克斯坦阿拉木图、中国北京与成都，以及土耳其伊斯坦布尔、特拉布宗、马拉蒂亚等地音乐学院的客座教授，并在亚美尼亚、阿塞拜疆、印度尼西亚、新加坡和东帝汶等国策划指导艺术项目。

自1988年起，他就以合唱团和交响乐团指挥的身份活跃于奥地利及国际舞台。他曾与格拉茨大学合唱团与乐团、加拿大“十三弦”室内乐团，以及土耳其“博鲁桑”管弦乐团合作。他于1993年至1995年在格拉茨音乐与表演艺术大学任教，并于1995年在美国音乐研究学院（AIMS）担任指挥。1997年至2001年，他在罗马奥地利文化论坛中担任指挥，并参与了罗马圣塞西莉亚国立音乐学院的艺术项目。2001年至2005年，他在伊斯坦布尔的奥地利文化论坛指挥“伊斯坦布尔欧洲之声”合唱团，并于2005年春天领导欧盟“欧洲视野”项目，该项目在土耳其8所音乐学院开展指挥大师班，并在5个国家举办音乐会。2010年至2013年间，他担任智利普罗维登西亚爱乐乐团和康塞普西翁交响乐团的指挥。

2007年至2010年，他在德黑兰奥地利-伊朗交响乐团及合唱团担任艺术总监。自2008年起，他在欧盟担任文化项目评估专家。维杰·乌帕德亚雅于2010年创立了印度国家青年交响乐团，这是印度首个青年交响乐团。该乐团汇集了来自印度20个邦的青年音乐家，同时也向世界传达了印度对于演绎本国交响乐作品信心和潜力。2011年，该乐团在“印度德国年”开幕式以及德里“庆祝意大利统一150周年”节日音乐会的舞台上献艺。

自2009年以来，他多次以指挥身份与中国交响乐团乐队及合唱团合作。2017年至2020年，他作为文化和旅游部的外聘专家，负责为中国交响乐团及合唱团策划组织艺术项目。2016年，受中国交响乐团委托，创作其第二部交响曲《长安门》，这部作品也是中国首部委约海外作曲家创作的大型作品。该作品以《论语》《道德经》《诗经》等中国经典为灵感，于2017年在北京和维也纳首演。

The Austrian conductor and composer Vijay Upadhyaya was born in Lucknow in India. He holds degrees in conducting and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria as well as degrees in Tabla and Kathak in India. His is also a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, economics and history from the Lucknow University.

He presently is also the artistic director of the Vienna University Philharmonic which involves the annual coordination and direction of about 50 concerts for orchestra and choir. He has been nominated for the "Golden Award of Honor" by the Republic of Austria for his cultural activities in the country. He has performed with world-renowned artists such as Peter Sellars, Christoph Schlingensief and Subhash and worked at the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Burgtheater , the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.

Since 2009 he has been a regular conductor of the Chinese National Orchestra and Chous. For the years 2017-2020 he been appointed as a cultural expert by the Chinese Ministry of Culture to develop and conduct programs for the China National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He was commissioned by the Chinese National Orchestra to write his 2nd Symphony, ChangAn Men (The Gates to long lasting Peace) in 2016. This is the first large commissioning by the People's Republic of China to a non-Chinese composer.  This work was premiered in Beijing and Vienna in 2017. And focuses on ancient Chinese culture with texts from the Lunyu by Confucius, the Daodejing by Laotse and the poetry collection of Shijing.

2014 his 1st Symphony "Shakti", which was premiered in Vienna. This work is based on Indian literature from the Rigveda, by Kabir, Amir Khusroo and Meera Bai. In 2015 his Work "Ananadam" which is based on a Tamil and Malayalam folksong and in 2016 his composition "Mangalam" based on a Marathi and Rajasthani folksong was premiered in Chennai and at the NCPA in Mumbai. These compositions are creating an international awareness for Indian traditional music and Indian literature.

He founded the India National Youth Orchestra in 2010, which is the first undertaking of its kind in India. This brings together young Indian musicians from 20 different Indians states together and shows the world that India is now also ready for symphonic music with an Indian content. In 2011 this orchestra played the opening of the German Year in India and the festival concert in Delhi for the 150 years of the unification of Italy.

He was visiting professor at the conservatoires in Paris, Edmonton (Canada), Tbilisi (Georgia), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Chengdu and Beijing (China), Istanbul, Trabzon and Malatya (Turkey) and in Damascus and has directed projects in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia , Singapore and East Timor. Since 1988 he is active as a conductor of choirs and orchestras in Austria and abroad. These include the "Graz University Choir and Orchestra," "Thirteen Strings" in Canada and the "Borusan Orchestra" in Turkey. 1993-1995 he was lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. In 1995 he conducted at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS). His arrangements of Austrian carols are broadcasted throughout Europe.

2007-2010 he was artistic director of the Austro-Iranian Symphony Orchestra and Choir in Tehran. Since 2008 he works as an expert for the evaluation of cultural projects for the European Union. 2010-2013 he was conductor of the Providencia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concepción Symphony Orchestra in Chile. From 2001 to 2005 he conducted the "European Voices Istanbul" at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Istanbul and in the spring of 2005, he was head of a European Union project called "European Horizons" in Turkey. In this project master classes in conducting were held at 8 Turkish conservatories and concerts given in 5 countries. From 1997 to 2001 he worked as a conductor at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Rome and was involved in projects with the "Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia".
